17 years after designing the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery, we were delighted to be re-engaged to design and coordinate the transformation of the old merchandise sales area with a new retail area that complimented the structure’s existing architectural aesthetic, and to suit the growing needs of the gallery. The approach that we took utilised the existing curved forms and shapes of the gallery. It was important for us to strike the right balance between providing attractive functional display opportunities, whilst preserving that luminous permeability and transparency of the gallery’s exterior to interior and visa versa.
To ensure a value-for-money investment, we proposed to reuse some pre-existing high quality joinery elements made of Queensland walnut and white corian. In contrast with this material we introduced new bleached tones of limed Hoop Pine plywood boasting exposed polished edges, within an elegant new framework of modular slim silver aluminium components. The resulting refurbished retail area is warm, modern, classic, clean, simple, light and reflective, using a natural material palette that compliments the existing palette of the Gallery.
